Time: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Tuition: $899 (Save $200 by taking both the Master Portrait and the Master Figure Painting workshops for only $1,598)

This Master Class Portrait Painting Workshop will focus on a seven day long pose, working from a live model. Every morning the instructor will demo from 9 - 11:00am in order to lead students on what they will work on for the day. The first day will focus on the grisaille stage, which uses a brown paint to establish the drawing. The instructor will illustrate how to get better proportions by calibrating abstract angle relationships and working from larger to smaller, basic anatomy, and capturing the likeness of the model. The second day the class will use flesh tones to block-in the planes of the structure, begin modeling the forms 'toward the light source', establishing a basic value range, and further developing the head anatomy. This will create the portrait as an under-painting; color will then be incorporated at a later stage.

The third day a basic color theory will be introduced, at which point the class will take a short break from the long pose to explore a separate color study of the portrait. We will then apply what we have learned about color to the figure and its environment of the long pose, resulting in a full color under-painting by the end of the fourth day. Finally, students will be guided on how to finish over the course of the last three days. At this stage students will learn about painting wet-into-wet, dry scumbling, finish modeling, rendering, edges and focal points.

This workshop has been expanded to give students more time to develop their portrait painting to a fuller finish. Students will leave with one fully finished painting, one color study, and a more thorough understanding of the painting process from start to finish with the portrait as our subject. In addition, there will be three evening events throughout the week which will include: an alla prima portrait painting demonstration from Studio Incamminati.

Additional workshop events include:

  • Incamminati faculty and fellows will demo on Tuesday evening
  • Guided tour at the Philadelphia Museum of Art with instructor on Friday evening
  • Dinner (cost for dinner not included) as a class with the instructor on Saturday evening

Workshop artists also receive:

  • Free Studio Incamminati tote bag and baseball cap
  • One month free access to the exclusive Studio Incamminati Online Art Resources digital library which includes Nelson Shanks demos and publications by renowned artists. (Access to the password-restricted gallery begins August 9 and continues for 30 days.)
