Oil Painting: Still Life and Figure
Robin Frey
Saturdays, 9 a.m. - noon
April 14 - June 30
Tuition $499
By combining the study of still life and the figure, students practice the rhythm of
balancing and maintaining volume, color and light throughout the many stages of a
painting. The class goal is to understand the importance of a moving and meaningful composition while tackling the continuous task of improving drawing,
edges and color. Students of all levels are encouraged to register. Beginners work in
charcoal before embarking on the study of color.
Robin Dawn Frey received an Honor Award in the Portrait Society of America’s 2008 Portrait Competition and was one of four studio artists chosen by Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for Face to Face: The Craniofacial Program Portrait Project. Her work is featured in “Portrait Painting Atelier: Old Master Techniques and Contemporary Applications.” She has exhibited in numerous shows and her work is included in many private collections.

Portrait Painting: Grisaille to Alla Prima
Katya Held
Saturdays, 9 a.m. - noon
April 14 - June 30
Tuition $499
Students focus on the importance of studying from life. Getting
an essence of the likeness, determining the most important
information and making a simple statement with paint are some of
the most difficult things in a portrait painting. Students paint from
the life model in short and long sessions, focusing on capturing
proper relationships of shape, value, color, temperature and edge.
Students learn to see the portrait as a group of abstract shapes while
executing grisaille and alla prima paintings. They learn to recognize
the structure of the head, the landmarks, abstract shape of light and
shadow, how light falls across the surface of face and head, value
and color shifts while painting wet into wet. Instruction is given at
students’ easels and through demonstrations. This class is designed
for painters of all levels of experience.
Katya Held, a Studio Incamminati teaching fellow, has had her work displayed
worldwide in galleries and exhibition halls including Newman
Galleries in Philadelphia, the National Arts Club in New York, the
League of Artists of Russia and the Baron Stiglitz Museum in Saint
Petersburg, Russia.
