This class will be held online using Zoom for live teaching and Google Classroom for resources and materials. Students will need access to a laptop or desktop computer. Find further instructions for working online and the supply list at the bottom of the page.
The sketchbook can serve many purposes--it can be a place to explore new ideas, a place to record notes and resources for later, or it can exist as it's own living, breathing collection of work. This course will demystify the sketchbook and explore the many ways it can support and improve your skills as an artist.
We’ll use the sketchbook as a vessel to learn about perceptual concepts and design ideas, including shape, measurement, tonality, structure, and rendering techniques. Sarah will also showcase how different artists have incorporated sketchbooks into their practice, going over different strategies when curating your book as it's own body of work, utilizing image placement, subject matter, and compositional structures.
Students will have the opportunity to engage with a variety of exercises that will reinforce the core concept from that week, while also building a sketchbook practice that can be applied in the studio. In the final four weeks, we will move to a larger work that will give students the chance to apply these concepts to a longer drawing with guidance, while also taking the opportunity to talk about what can and should stay when going from a “sketchbook drawing” to a “resolved work.”
