| McElhinney is the author of Classical Life Drawing Studio (Sterling Publishing, 2010) named by Library Journal Review as one of the Top 10 instructional books of 2010 and called “a landmark volume” by American Arts Quarterly. He recently moderated a panel discussion, “The Role of Classical Life Drawing in Twenty-first Century Pedagogy,” at the Art Students League of New York which drew record attendance.
The Delaware Valley native received his BFA from the Tyler School of Art, his MFA from Yale and studied at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. He is a realist painter who lived in Philadelphia in the 1980s, when he received a National Endowment for the Arts award.
A frequent contributor to American Arts Quarterly, McElhinney also conducts oral-history interviews for the Smithsonian Institution Archives of American Art and podcast interviews for the Newington Cropsey Cultural Studies Center. He teaches drawing at Pratt Institute and the Art Students League of New York. |

| This innovative two-night event illustrates how Studio Incamminati instructors start and develop a painting using methods taught at the school. Each instructor demonstrates his or her individual interpretation of the painting process handed down to them by Nelson Shanks.
Working side by side offers a rare opportunity to watch these artists start and develop paintings. Students will be challenged to apply the techniques during the workshop. The completed works are available for purchase during a silent auction. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Studio Incamminati. |

World renowned for capturing the complex nature of realist art, his notable commissions include Diana, Princess of Wales, presidents Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton and His Holiness Pope John Paul II. Other significant commissions include Luciano Pavarotti for the Metropolitan Opera, Mstislav Rostropovich for the Kennedy Center, and Denyce Graves for the National Portrait Gallery.

| In this comprehensive presentation, Natalie shares both her personal artistic journey and her exploration of Alla Prima painting.
Alla Prima, translated from Italian as “the first,” is a direct, painterly process completed wet-on–wet in a single session. Natalie is painting two 14” x 14” portraits a week and explains how she incorporates her Studio Incamminati training into the works.
She also traces the history of Alla Prima portraiture spotlighting the work of Franz Hals, John Singer Sargent and Frank Duveneck as well as contemporary examples from Nelson Shanks and Richard Schmidt. |

In addition to technique, it covers everything from paper choice to charcoal mix and properly toning paper.
The demo focuses on looking for abstract shapes and gesture, pushing limits of the simple light-and-shadow shapes and getting basic shapes as accurate as possible in a linear way. |
