Antonio Mancini and the Vance Jordan Collection
Philadelphia Museum of Art
December 2007
Marking the first exhibition in the United States devoted exclusively to Antonio Mancini, one of the most prominent Italian painters of the late nineteenth century, this exhibition highlights a unique group of paintings and pastels that recently entered the Museum’s collections as a gift from the estate of the American art collector and dealer Vance N. Jordan. Additional paintings complement and provide context for the Museum’s acquisitions.

Cecilia Beaux, American Figure Painter
Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts
March 18, 2008
Organized chronologically, the retrospective surveys Beaux’s 40-year career—from her early years in Philadelphia to her studies in France and her later activities in New York and Cape Ann, Mass. Cecilia Beaux will also trace aspects of the artist’s colorful biography and relationships with key historical figures such as Theodore Roosevelt, Henry James, Ida Tarbell and the World War I Allied leaders Cardinal Mercier and Georges Clemenceau.
The exhibition features Beaux’s highly regarded portraits in the context of her commercial and student works and figure paintings, as well as landscape and still-life compositions. Beaux’s sitters were drawn from the public realm—academia (numerous college presidents), business, organized religion, politics (Theodore Roosevelt, 1902) and high society (Flora Whitney, 1916)—as well as from personal acquaintance (Richard Watson Gilder, 1902, and Ida Tarbell, ca. 1920); these circles frequently overlapped, permitting Beaux’s selective approach to commissions. As she once observed, “It doesn’t pay to paint everybody.”

Museum Trips in '07-'08
Edward Hopper
National Gallery of Art
November 6, 2007
This is the first comprehensive survey of Edward Hopper's career to be seen in American museums outside New York in more than 25 years. Focusing on the period of the artist's great achievements—from about 1925 to midcentury—the exhibition will feature such iconic paintings as Automat (1927), Drug Store (1927), Early Sunday Morning (1930), New York Movie (1939), and Nighthawks (1942).
Edward Hopper's classic works captured the realities of urban and rural American life with a poignancy and beauty that have placed them among the most enduring and popular images of the 20th century. This exhibition of about 60 oil paintings, 25 watercolors, and 14 prints will reveal Hopper (1882–1967) as a creator of compelling images who produced remarkably subtle and painterly effects in both oil and watercolor. It will also examine how his images were seen in his own time.

Slide Presentation on Portraiture
Yuqi Wang
Celebrated artist Yuqi Wang trained at the Tianjin Academy in China. He has lectured and exhibited extensively across China, Canada, the UK and America. His work hangs in public collections in China, the U.S. and the collection of the Japanese Royal Family. In 2000, he was awarded the Portrait Society of America Grand Prize. In 2006, he won Second Prize in the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery competition for his painting From Red Hook.
Mr. Wang says of his work: “What draws me, as an artist, to put brush to canvas is at once both public and private. The world I reveal is a blend of both the ‘Occident’ and the ‘Orient’; my passion for both Classic European portraiture and the Pre-Raphaelite movement is gently kissed by my Chinese heritage. I find the classic styles to be timeless, with a warmth and honesty not offered any more with modern movements.” |

Lecture 1: Color Formula
Bart Lindstrom
Bart will talk about his unique double circle pallet which allows him to quickly paint with compliment colors. He will show how he blends on the painting and captures flesh tones in a wide range of colors but with close value ranges. He will explain his techniques and the influence of watercolor techniques that he has carried over to his oil paintings. He will talk not only about the practice of applying paint, but also the thought process and aids to going beyond portraits to capturing personalities and the poetry of an artistic painting.
Born in Riverside California, Bart Lindstrom was raised to appreciate the outdoors and art. Although he loved to paint, his father counseled him to study business. After graduating of the University of Southern California with a degree in business marketing, he started to work in an advertising firm, but not in the creative department located across the hall.
Bart is also a nationally recognized artist, conference speaker, former board member of the American Society of Portrait Artists, and co-founder of the Portrait Society of America. A feature article in Southwest Art magazine stated: “Bart Lindstrom is an artist who exhibits a rare quality in revealing the inner essence of his subjects. He seems to have exploited the medium to its utmost possibilities.” |

Curatorial Tour of the John G. Johnson Collection
Hosted by Adjunct Curator, Carl Strehlke
Philadelphia Museum of Art
3:30pm on Tuesday, April 17, 2007
In 1917, noted lawyer and collector John G. Johnson bequeathed his collection of more than 1,200 paintings to the citizens of Philadelphia. It is one of the finest groups of paintings assembled by an individual in the United States, containing masterpieces by Italian, Flemish, Dutch, German, Spanish, French, and English artists. The collection was exhibited in Johnson's own house on South Broad Street until 1933, when galleries were made available at the Museum and the transfer of the paintings was approved by the Court of Common Pleas, which administers the trust. In 1989, the court authorized the Museum's plan to integrate galleries of the Johnson Collection with the Museum's own holdings, allowing for a more unified presentation of European art between the fourteenth and the late-nineteenth century.
Dr. Carl Strehlke, adjunct curator at the Philadelphia Museum of Art will be presenting the John G. Johnson Collection during a private tour with Studio Incamminati artists. This will be Dr. Strehlke's second lecture with Studio Incamminati; in April 2004, he curated and presented the Pontormo, Bronzino & the Medici.
Daniel Garber: Romantic Realism
Lecture by Incamminati Instructor, Patrick Connors
Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts
Daniel Garber (1880-1958) was a mainstay of the Pennsylvania Impressionist group of painters, and was one of the most significant and decorated artists of his generation. Jointly organized by the James A. Michener Art Museum and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, this exhibition contains 170 of Garber's finest paintings and works on paper culled from the collections of both institutions as well as a number of private loans, and is curated by Dr. Lance Humphries, author of the Daniel Garber Catalogue Raisonné. Taking place concurrently at the Michener and PAFA, the exhibit will be split chronologically, with the works at the Academy examining the period of Garber's early work between 1897 and 1929, and the Michener examining his later work from 1930 through 1955.
Born in Indiana, Garber initially studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy but eventually enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy. When he and his wife returned from a period of study in Europe, they settled permanently near the Bucks County town of Lumberville. In 1909, Garber was invited to join the faculty of the Pennsylvania Academy, where he remained an instructor until 1950, exerting a strong influence on several generations of Academy students by upholding traditional aesthetic values of the late nineteenth century. During the first two decades of the twentieth century, he became noted for a series of paintings of local quarries that transformed landscapes disfigured by industry into serene and glowing scenes. He also painted dreamlike spring landscapes depicting blossoming trees in dazzling tonalities, as well as a number of quiet domestic figure paintings of family members.
Patrick Connors, instructor of Perspective presented the Daniel Garber exhibition in a private tour with Studio Incamminati artists. This trip is part of Leona Shanks' class: Cast Drawing.
